Born in the Purple: How a Teenager Killed a 3,000-Year Luxury

There was a stretch of history, several thousand years of it, when the wrong person in a purple robe could be executed for the offence. The color surrendered its exclusivity not to a rival empire but to an eighteen-year-old who was trying to make something else entirely.


Somewhere in a wardrobe near you, in all likelihood, there is something purple that cost almost nothing and means almost nothing, and this would have struck any Roman of standing as close to obscene, because for the better part of recorded history purple was not a color one simply wore but a privilege one was granted, hoarded, legislated over and occasionally killed for. A robe dyed in the true deep shade was the ancient equivalent of arriving somewhere in a car worth more than the house, an object so saturated with cost that its whole purpose was to be recognized across a room and resented from a distance. The gap between that world and the one where purple turns up on a supermarket lunchbox is one of the more entertaining collapses in the history of luxury, and like most such collapses it turns on an accident nobody involved saw coming.

To understand the fuss, one has to start with the deeply unglamorous source of all this grandeur, which was a sea snail, or rather a great many of them. The dye the ancient world went into raptures over, Tyrian purple, named for the Phoenician port of Tyre where the trade flourished, was wrung from the mucus of predatory murex snails along the eastern Mediterranean, and the manufacture of it was about as far from elegant as commerce gets. Workers gathered the creatures in their thousands, extracted the relevant gland, and left the results to rot and steep into dye, a process so foul-smelling that the workshops producing the most prestigious color on earth had to be kept downwind of anywhere respectable. The arithmetic of it borders on the absurd; by estimates that have circulated for generations, something in the order of ten thousand snails gave up their lives for a single gram of finished dye, barely enough to edge one garment. What made the resulting cloth so intoxicating was not only its rarity but its behavior in the light, a color that read almost black in shadow and then flared to a deep glowing crimson-violet in sun, shifting as the wearer moved, so that a purple robe seemed to be lit from within. It was, in every sense, wealth of a faintly ridiculous, conspicuous, look-at-what-I-can-waste variety, and it looked magnificent.


Colors this expensive rarely stay a matter of personal taste for long, and purple was swiftly conscripted into the business of showing who outranked whom. Rome, ever fond of a rule about who could own what, folded it into the sumptuary laws that policed luxury, and by the fourth century the richest Tyrian shades had been narrowed down to the emperor alone, with senators grudgingly allowed a single stripe of it along the edge of a toga as a sort of consolation prize. So total was the association that the color stopped being a color and became a shorthand for the throne itself, which is how we ended up with phrases like taking the purple for seizing power, and born in the purple for the children of reigning emperors, expressions still in circulation long after anyone remembers they were ever about a snail.


If Rome was proprietorial about purple, Byzantium was frankly obsessive, running production through the imperial court, reserving the finest silks for the ruling family, and staging the whole thing with a theatricality that would embarrass a modern fashion house. Empresses gave birth in a chamber lined with purple porphyry, so that the heir emerged quite literally into the colour, and the court dressed its power in shimmering violet silk shot through with gold thread, an aesthetic engineered to make the emperor appear less like a man and more like something the heavens had upholstered. The arrangement was backed by penalties that escalated from the punitive to the lethal, to the point where merely attempting to counterfeit the imperial dye could, under one edict, cost a person their head. There is something almost comic in the seriousness of it, an entire bureaucracy of violence erected around a shade of fabric, though the joke rather depends on not being the tradesman caught with the wrong dyepot. The obsession outlasted a great many emperors but not the empire itself, and when Constantinople was sacked in 1204 the elaborate apparatus that kept murex purple flowing simply fell apart, never to be rebuilt, so that the color of absolute power quietly went extinct for want of anyone rich enough to make it.

What followed was six centuries of purple remaining rare and costly and vaguely holy, the preserve of royalty and high clergy, admired and unaffordable in roughly equal measure, and there is every reason to think it would have continued in that comfortable exclusivity indefinitely had it not been undone by a teenager with a chemistry set and a ruined Easter holiday. The teenager was William Henry Perkin, a student of eighteen at London's Royal College of Chemistry, who in 1856 had been handed the distinctly overambitious assignment of manufacturing quinine, the malaria drug, out of coal tar, which was then the black, sticky, universally despised waste of the coal-gas industry and an unlikely starting point for anything at all. Perkin, tinkering away in a rough laboratory at the top of his family home, failed at this entirely, as most people would, and was left with an unpromising dark sludge for his trouble.

The interesting part is what he did with the failure, because when he set about cleaning the mess with alcohol the residue bloomed into a vivid, arresting purple, and Perkin, who painted and dabbled in photography and therefore had an eye, noticed two things a duller chemist might have rinsed straight down the sink. The color was beautiful, and it gripped silk without washing out, which together meant he had accidentally solved the exact problem that had defeated the ancient world for three millennia, namely how to produce a rich purple without a beach full of dead molluscs. He initially draped his discovery in borrowed prestige by calling it Tyrian purple, though the market preferred the prettier French word for the mallow flower, mauve, and mauve it became. Rather than gift the finding to science, Perkin patented it, walked out of college to his professor's dismay, talked his father into gambling the family money, and opened a factory, and within a few short years he was turning industrial waste into the color of emperors at a price that put it within reach of shop girls.


The result was precisely the sort of stampede one might expect when something previously forbidden suddenly appears on every counter, and by the late 1850s London and Paris were so thoroughly overrun with the new shade that the satirical press likened the craze to an outbreak of disease, the mauve measles, which is a rather good joke at the expense of fashion's herd instinct and also entirely fair. Queen Victoria wore it to a royal wedding, the couturiers of Paris built collections around it, and the color that had once required an emperor's blood or at least his permission was suddenly this season's must-have, worn by anyone who could reach a draper's counter. Purple had been democratized, which is a polite way of saying it had been stripped of the mystique that made people covet it in the first place, since a thing everyone can have is a thing no one needs to envy.

The lasting significance, as it happens, had nothing to do with fashion and everything to do with what Perkin's accident revealed, which was that brilliant, lasting color could be summoned out of the ugliest industrial leftovers, a realization that founded the entire synthetic dye industry and dragged organic chemistry along behind it into medicine, explosives, photography and perfume. It is a peculiar sort of legacy, that the man who ended purple's three-thousand-year career as the ultimate luxury did so not out of any interest in luxury but by fumbling a chemistry assignment, and that the death of the world's most exclusive color should be, in the end, the birth of modern chemistry.


And yet the instinct that built purple into a fortress never really went anywhere, which is the part worth carrying out of the history and into the present. We no longer ration beauty by law, but we ration it all the same, by price, by waitlist, by the discreet understanding that some things are simply not available to most people, and the appetite Perkin briefly satisfied has quietly reassembled itself around the handbag with a two-year queue, the watch allocated rather than sold, the shade of red a fashion house has trademarked so thoroughly that a rival using it can be met in court rather than on the catwalk. Purple itself still keeps a little of its old rank, worn by cardinals and clung to by at least one chocolate maker fierce enough to defend its exact violet as intellectual property. The color came down to earth, but the desire it once organized, the human wish to own the thing others cannot, turned out to be the most durable dye of all. It never needed a snail, it only ever needed something rare, and someone forbidden to have it.
