Most smart locks are designed around a single door type, typically a standard wooden front door with a mortise or deadbolt. The Aqara Smart Lock U500 series, now available in the UK, takes a different approach, offering three separate versions built for door types that retrofit smart locks have historically struggled with.

The Smart Gate Lock U500 is designed for iron gates and grille-style doors. The Smart Glass Door Lock U500 fits glass doors without drilling or structural modification, using a surface-mounted clamp system that leaves the glass intact. The Smart Rim Lock U500 uses a front-and-back surface-mounted design with no mortise required, making it a straightforward upgrade for most standard entrance and interior doors. All three are built with full metal frames, reinforced dual-hook bolts, and a through-lock cylinder engineered to resist prying and forced entry.

Despite the different physical configurations, the three models share identical features across unlocking methods and connectivity. Fingerprint recognition uses a 160x160 pixel sensor and stores up to 50 unique prints locally, with all access data encrypted using AES. Additional unlocking methods include NFC, passcode, and app control via the Aqara Home app. Apple Home Key support allows the door to be unlocked directly from an iPhone or Apple Watch via Apple Wallet. Voice assistant compatibility covers Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings.

Connectivity runs on Matter over Thread using the Aliro standard, which handles cross-platform integration without requiring cloud-based credential storage. A Thread border router is required for Matter functionality. A gyroscope sensor detects when the door closes and triggers automatic locking without needing a separate contact sensor. Additional features include a Do Not Disturb mode that suppresses general alerts during set hours while retaining notifications for forced entry or doors left ajar and a One Tap Dual Unlock function that allows multiple Aqara locks to release simultaneously.

The outer panels are rated IP65 and the inner panels IP54. Power comes from four AA batteries with a quoted battery life of up to seven months. A USB-C emergency port allows the lock to be powered by a phone or power bank if the batteries are depleted. A built-in doorbell is included on the rim lock.

All three models are available now through Aqara's UK online store. Pricing ranges from £279.98 to £299.99 depending on the version, with a 15% launch discount available using the code AQAUKU500 at checkout.
