Love It Was Never Meant For Me by Kulbhushan Chaudhary, or KK, is one of those books that hits you right in the feels, but not always in the way you'd expect. The story is a straightforward exploration of heartbreak, trying to move on from love, and that messy in-between phase where you're just stuck. The protagonist is someone who’s in love, loses it, and then spends pages thinking about what went wrong — a pretty familiar scenario for anyone who’s been through the pain of watching someone walk away.
There’s an honesty in the book, but it’s raw in a way that makes you almost uncomfortable. It’s not trying to make you feel better about things. In fact, it almost lets you sit in your own emotions for a bit, forcing you to confront things like jealousy, possessiveness, and insecurity — all the things that we tend to ignore when we talk about love, but that are so damn real. There’s nothing sugar-coated here.
But here's the thing — it’s not revolutionary. The writing is simple and unpolished, almost as though it’s a stream of consciousness. It’s personal, but in a detached way, like reading someone’s journal. It doesn’t leave you with a sense of closure or comfort — just a lot of open-ended thoughts. If you're looking for a neat resolution or a clean arc, this book isn’t going to give you that.
For those who are looking to dig into their emotions or who feel like they’re stuck in the same cycle of heartbreak, it might resonate. It’s not a fairy tale with a happy ending, and it doesn’t try to pretend like love is anything but messy. But for anyone who’s hoping for a more well-rounded, polished take on love, it might feel too raw or repetitive. Do not expect any plot twists or preaching, as it represents the relatable emotions and feelings that one of us or somebody around us must have gone through, and it's just that we were not able to learn the meaning and reason behind their acts.
My Verdict: If you want to relive those achy moments, and if you are fine with the imperfections of the writing, and writing that feels like a conversation, this book is for you. But if there is a Shashi Tharoor in you (yeah, we have got our own Shakespeare-kinda vocabulary one) who needs polished words, crisp sentences, and more depth, you may think again.
