Inside SANIKB: How a Foshan Ceramics Manufacturer Turns Buyer Briefs Into Locked Specifications

For twenty-five years, Rokan Liu's factory floor in Foshan has been sending kitchen and bath fittings into homes and hotels across North America. He doesn't talk about ceramics in terms of trends. He talks about tolerances, revisions, and who's accountable when something goes wrong, closer to how an engineer might describe aircraft parts than how most manufacturers describe sinks.
Liu has watched the industry's baseline expectations shift over that quarter-century. Price, tooling capacity, and volume used to be the whole conversation. Now buyers want to know what a factory can be trusted to protect: market-specific compliance, revision-controlled drawings, and product data that stays consistent from one production lot to the next. Manufacturing, in his view, has changed jobs. It once meant adapting a domestic design for export. Today it means building a product around how a specific market installs it, uses it, and lives with it, which forces industrial design, plumbing interfaces, cabinet clearances, and finish tolerances to be resolved together instead of one after another.

SANIKB operates its own ceramic and fireclay plant in Foshan, sourcing faucets, quartz, and stainless steel through a network of audited partners rather than manufacturing every material in-house. "Our role is not simply to fill a container," Liu says. "It is to translate a buyer's brief into a controlled product specification and then protect that specification through sampling, certification, production, inspection, packing, and repeat orders." The logic behind that split is straightforward: no single factory can credibly master every material it touches. Ceramic depends on body formulation, glazing, and kiln control. Faucets depend on metallurgy and plating. Quartz and stainless steel carry entirely separate capital demands. SANIKB keeps the category closest to its identity in-house and holds its partner network to the same standard it holds itself. Liu is careful to draw a line between auditing a supplier and handing off responsibility for it; SANIKB retains ownership of the approved specification, the bill of materials, the inspection criteria, and the corrective-action process regardless of who runs the production line.

Certification is where that discipline gets tested most directly. SANIKB holds cUPC and IAPMO approval for the U.S. and Canadian markets, and for Liu, certification isn't paperwork added at the end of a process; it's a design input from the first sketch. Treat it as an afterthought, he says, and the usual result is delay, redesign, or a certified sample that no longer matches what actually ships. So the destination market gets defined precisely before design work starts, drawings and materials are checked against that market's requirements, and once a configuration is approved, nothing about it shifts casually. "A component, dimension, or material cannot be changed casually simply because it looks equivalent," he says.
Multi-phase hotel refits and residential developments, some running to thousands of units, reveal where the real difficulty sits. According to Liu, getting the first approved unit right was never the hard part. "It is making the final unit, months later, match the same intent." An approved drawing, a locked color standard, and a golden sample that every subsequent piece is measured against exist so a small improvement introduced midway through a rollout doesn't quietly turn into a mismatch by the final phase. One project he references, 1,860 units delivered across five phases, came down less to manufacturing volume and more to information discipline: cartons correctly identified, and replacement protocols already worked out before the first shipment left the dock.

Product development at SANIKB follows a similarly rigid sequence. A buyer's brief becomes a requirements document before design work begins, resolving ambiguity early rather than letting it surface expensively after tooling is cut. Concept, CAD, and design-for-manufacture review each happen in order before a design earns status as what Liu calls the golden sample, the reference point every later unit is measured against. The entire sequence, he says, exists to prevent "tooling first, solving later." As he puts it, "Tooling should confirm a resolved product, not become the place where unresolved decisions are discovered."

Selling into markets as different as U.S. big-box retail and the Middle East and Latin America is where most brands start blending into what Liu calls a cosmetic average. His response is to split every product into two layers: a core idea covering proportion, geometry, and function, and a market-specific configuration covering mounting method, plumbing interface, and packaging, adjusted without touching the core. A basin, in his example, can hold the same visual character everywhere even as its drain and dimensions shift to match a regional installation standard. "The better approach is a disciplined platform," he says, "one clear product logic with controlled regional variants."
Trade shows serve a different purpose for SANIKB than trend-spotting. Liu enters KBIS and Expo Revestir with specific questions already prepared, then leaves having logged the objections installers keep raising, the material pairings buyers keep asking about, and the gaps nobody has filled yet. Some of that becomes a new product brief. Just as often, it becomes a decision not to chase something. "Disciplined product direction," he says, "is partly about knowing what not to add."

Asked where Chinese manufacturing will actually win over the next five years, Liu doesn't point to cost, long the industry's default answer. He points to accountability: the ability to combine design, compliance, reliable data, and after-sales support without losing control as programs scale, a capability he sees becoming more important as buyers carry leaner inventories and launch more regional variants than before. "The companies that make that capability transparent and accept responsibility from the first drawing through the replacement part will become long-term product partners rather than interchangeable vendors."
Twenty-five years into running SANIKB, that's the thing Liu keeps returning to. Not the sink, not the finish, not the show floor, but the promise behind the spec sheet, and whether it holds all the way to the last container.
