There are books we read for joy, some for knowledge, and then a few that stir something deeper—something almost sacred. Heroes of Kargil by Rishi Raj falls into that rare category. It's more than just a children's book. It's a deeply moving introduction to the spirit of India, to the kind of courage that doesn’t just belong in textbooks but deserves to be remembered at the family dinner table, in classrooms, and yes—even at bedtime.

I picked up Heroes of Kargil because I wanted my 10-year-old son to read stories that matter—tales that stay with you long after the last page. Stories that carry truth, emotion, and legacy. What I didn’t expect was that this little illustrated book, written so thoughtfully for young readers, would leave both of us so profoundly moved.

The book opens a window to one of the most important chapters in India’s military history—the Kargil War of 1999. Without overcomplicating the political backdrop or diluting the gravity of the conflict, it introduces children to the incredibly human side of war: bravery, sacrifice, and what it truly means to serve your country. The tone is respectful, emotional, and age-appropriate—a balance that’s incredibly hard to strike, but Rishi Raj manages it with grace.

What makes the book so accessible is its format. It’s richly illustrated, with concise stories about soldiers like Captain Vikram Batra, Captain Manoj Pandey, Major Rajesh Adhikari, Captain Anuj Nayyar, and many others whose names we’ve heard, but whose stories often remain unfamiliar to the younger generation. Each chapter reads like a tribute—not just to the individual heroes, but to the countless unnamed soldiers who stood by them.

When I handed the book to my son, I wasn’t sure how he’d take it. He’s usually into adventure novels and comics. But within minutes, he was hooked. He sat quietly flipping through the pages, pausing at the illustrations, asking questions, wanting to know more about what happened next. When he finished, he looked up at me and said, “I didn’t know real people could be this brave.” That one sentence told me everything. The book had done its job.

He now knows the name Vikram Batra. He knows that courage sometimes means running uphill towards danger when everyone else is running away. He understands that heroes aren’t just in Marvel movies—they’re real, and they wore Indian Army uniforms.

As a parent, that moment was priceless.

Rishi Raj’s writing is sincere and grounded. It doesn’t dramatise war—it honours it. And in doing so, it becomes a book not just for kids, but for anyone who wants to understand the true meaning of heroism. It reminds us that bravery isn't loud, and sacrifice isn’t always seen. Sometimes, it’s a story quietly waiting to be read by the next generation.

Heroes of Kargil is ideal for children 6+, especially those starting to explore chapter books or developing a reading habit. But honestly, it deserves a place in every Indian home. Whether you’re nine or ninety, this is a book that leaves you a little prouder, a little more grateful, and a lot more aware of the people who fought for the peace we enjoy today.

If you're looking for a meaningful and inspiring read for your child this summer vacation, Heroes of Kargil is the perfect pick—a book that not only entertains but instills pride, courage, and the true meaning of heroism.
