In the hill town of Cherrapunji, known for its near-constant rain, a small Indian distillery has found a way to turn that weather into identity. Cherrapunji Eastern Craft Gin, produced by Raincheck Earth Co., is distilled from sustainably harvested rainwater and botanicals native to Meghalaya and the North-East.

The gin was conceived by Mayukh Hazarika, who wanted to create a spirit that reflected its origin rather than imitate established European styles. Working with a Dutch master distiller, he developed a formula that combines traditional distillation techniques with a regional approach to flavour. The spirit is infused with twelve botanicals, including soh sohra (Khasi mandarin), Assamese lime, wild forest pepper, pine-smoked tea, and local varieties of cardamom. The result is a clean, citrus-led gin with a subtle layer of smoke and spice, a profile that feels rooted rather than decorative.

Design plays an equally central role in how the brand presents itself. Each bottle is made from reusable stainless steel, chosen for both durability and sustainability. The surface is illustrated by Portland-based artist Reshidev RK, whose work depicts details from Meghalaya’s landscape, monoliths, bamboo forests, colonial Bedford buses, and the region’s characteristic rain-drenched hills. The artwork wraps around the bottle, giving it the quality of an object designed to be kept rather than discarded.

Earlier this year, the brand was the official pouring partner at Delhi Art Weekend, an event that positioned Cherrapunji as part of India’s growing design-led craft movement. Every part of the brand, from material choice to visual identity points to a larger idea: that design, when handled thoughtfully, can make sustainability tangible and culture visible.
