Kelly Wearstler has made her first foray into piano design with Timbra, a collaboration with British atelier Edelweiss, a studio that has long produced custom pieces for her interior projects.
Handcrafted in Cambridge, England, Timbra is constructed from layered birchwood veneer, its contours and curves drawn from the movement of sound waves. The exterior is sculpted and rimless, developed using a digital CAD model and produced with CNC machinery. Beneath the surface, the piano incorporates a patented welded steel frame and a Sitka spruce soundboard, ensuring that the acoustic performance holds up to the visual ambition of the piece.
The design positions the instrument as sculpture first, with the piano's functional identity becoming apparent only on closer inspection. Wearstler's sensorial approach to interiors, long defined by layered materiality and unexpected formal choices, translates directly into the object: Timbra does not look like a conventional piano from any angle.
Beyond its artistic presence, the piano meets Edelweiss' standards for sonic excellence, making it a serious instrument for players. It also includes self-playing technology for those who want the experience of live music at the touch of a button.
