Bengaluru-based lighting studio Oorjaa has released Coral Echoes, a table lamp developed as part of its Submerge collection. The design references coral structures and marine ecosystems, using form, material, and light rather than figurative imagery.
The lamp is constructed using hand-crafted banana fibre paper, supported by a minimal wire framework. This construction allows light to pass through the surface unevenly, producing variations in tone and intensity rather than a uniform glow. The form avoids symmetry, reflecting the irregular growth patterns found in coral formations.
According to Jenny Pinto, Founder and Creative Director of Oorjaa, the piece emerged from sustained research into marine life and its ecological role. The development process involved detailed biological sketching and close study of coral structures, with an emphasis on fragility, structure, and growth rather than decorative reference.

Lighting is distributed through a combination of internal illumination and optical fibre elements. The optical fibres guide light across the surface in fine lines, creating gradual shifts instead of sharp highlights. The output remains controlled and subdued, intended for ambient use rather than primary illumination.
Coral Echoes is positioned as a functional table lamp, designed for residential and quiet interior settings. Its scale, material palette, and light diffusion are intended to support spaces without becoming a visual focal point. The focus remains on construction, material behaviour, and restrained use of technology.
Founded in 1998 as Bengaluru’s first handmade paper studio, Oorjaa has continued to work with natural and reclaimed materials, applying slow, craft-led processes across lighting and object design. Over time, the studio has expanded its practice while maintaining a material-first approach.
Coral Echoes follows this trajectory, prioritising process and clarity over visual excess, and situating lighting design within a broader conversation around material use and environmental awareness.
