Crazy Cock has unveiled what it claims is a world first: an Indian single malt finished in Mahura casks. Titled Madhuca: The Heritage Editions, the release marks a significant moment not only for the brand but for Indian whisky-making, positioning indigenous ingredients and processes at the centre of a global luxury conversation. Crafted at South Seas Distilleries, the makers of India’s oldest single malts, the collection brings together heritage, experimentation, and a distinctly Indian sensibility.

South Seas Distilleries traces its whisky legacy back more than a century and has spent nearly five decades shaping India’s relationship with single malt. As international interest in Indian spirits continues to grow, Madhuca represents a deliberate shift forward, one that is rooted in local tradition while speaking to contemporary tastes. Finished in oak casks seasoned with Mahura spirit, the whisky introduces a flavour profile not previously explored in single malt production, designed for drinkers who value individuality over convention.

“Crazy Cock The Indian Single Malt Whisky represents the passion, patience and perseverance of fearless souls who dare to dream differently, just like our founder,” says Hamavand Chinoy, Director at South Seas Distilleries. “Behind every drop lies our century-long commitment to shaping the future of Indian single malt. This world-first Mahura cask finish is an extension of our never-ending quest for innovation, perfecting the art of Indian single malt and affirming India’s potential to redefine global whisky craftsmanship.”

The Mahura finish draws inspiration from the Mahua flower, an ancient tree referenced in the Vedas and deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of several Indian communities. South Seas Distilleries is the first commercial distiller of Mahua flower spirit, and the same casks that once held this indigenous spirit are now used to finish the Madhuca expressions. The result is a whisky that feels soft yet expressive, elevated without being heavy, and equally suited to slow sipping or refined cocktail interpretations in contemporary bars.

Madhuca comes in three different versions, each made from specially chosen oak casks to highlight a unique aspect of Indian land and flavors. While each expression has its own identity, they share a smooth, rounded structure with notes of honeyed florals, gentle spice, and a warmth that lingers on the palate. The collection is positioned not only for seasoned whisky drinkers but also for a new global audience discovering India as a serious force in avant-garde spirits.
